Gold Coast Health doctor lands study grant looking at improving sedation in children

A Gold Coast Health doctor has landed a $60,000 grant from the Emergency Medicine Foundation to look at how to make sedation a less stressful experience for children.


Dr Shane George is a paediatric critical care physician working in paediatric emergency medicine and paediatric intensive care at Gold Coast University Hospital. He is the clinical lead for children’s critical care research for Gold Coast Health, and is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland and Griffith University.

Dr Shane George is also an early career researcher interested in research that improves the safety of airway procedures in critical care and using haemostatic resuscitation techniques to reduce blood product requirements in paediatric haemorrhage.

He is a member of the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International collaborative (PREDICT) and the ANZICS Paediatric Study Group, collaborating on numerous multicentre projects.

Workforce Wellbeing pillar

The workforce pillar focuses on research aimed at understanding, informing and improving coping and resilience amongst ED staff. The overarching aim is to produce leading research that is meaningful to clinicians, policy makers, and decision makers.

Current projects in this area involve national and international studies of morale, stress and coping strategies, as well as workforce modelling for Emergency Departments.

We have received grants from a number of sources including the Emergency Medicine Foundation and Griffith University.

Ultrasound pillar

The ultrasound pillar has been developing for the promotion and improvement of diagnostic and procedural safety for the last 5 years. It’s focus has been on the review if current practices of focused ultrasound (PoCUS-Point of Care Ultrasound) and developing a practical teaching program with a focus on ultrasound guided vascular access. Collaborations with university and other HHS units in the latter are developing with a recent joint successful NHMRC grant to enhance the program further.
