Education programs

We support the professional development of the nursing and midwifery workforce by collaborating with education teams in clinical areas, providing a coordinated direction for education. Through various educational opportunities, we ensure that high quality person-centred care is delivered.

Professional development opportunities

Our professional development opportunities begin with nursing and midwifery orientation for new employees. They then move through to the preceptorship program, leadership training and mentorship, as well as other specific clinical and skill development opportunities.

Clinical units across our health service are also supported by a clinical nurse facilitator and a nurse educator to assist with service-specific professional development.

Transition support programs

Transition Support Programs (TSPs) are available in many clinical areas. We promote and encourage staff to use these programs as they support staff to transition to specialty positions and onto a post-graduate qualification pathway. Nurse educators from specialty areas coordinate and support the TSPs.

TSPs are offered in:

  • Acute Care
  • Cardiology
  • Emergency
  • Intensive Care
  • Medical Imaging
  • Mental Health
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Paediatrics
  • Perioperative
  • Rehabilitation
  • Renal.

Peer feedback

Peer feedback is part of nurses’ and midwives’ annual professional development discussions and is expected of all nurses and midwives.

Peer feedback can offer many benefits such as:

  • improving quality and safety
  • developing role potential
  • advancing practice skills

Scholarships

Scholarships to assist our nursing and midwifery staff in their life-long learning process are supported by the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation through a successful application.

Gold Coast Health Simulation Service

Simulated learning is delivered in the purpose-built facilities at Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital, using various strategies such as:

  • part task trainers
  • high fidelity manikins
  • simulated patients.

The service works across all professions and specialties, focusing on helping teams do their jobs well to ensure safe care. The service also offers translational simulation programs tailored for specific clinical areas.
