Gold Coast University Hospital Sub-Acute Expansion

The new Sub-Acute Building at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) is a major step forward in enhancing Queensland's health care infrastructure.

Seamlessly connected to the main GCUH this new building will add 70 beds, significantly boosting the hospital's capacity and supporting Gold Coast Health's growth.

New wards

The GCUH Sub-Acute Building will support the existing hospital facilities, enabling more efficient patient treatment and enhancing overall care quality.

This project is part of the Queensland Government’s broader Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program (AIDP), addressing the increasing demands on health care services.

Consisting of an additional 70 beds, the new building will offer specialised care across three wards for subacute care, with a focus on Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) and Memory Support.

This service expansion will enable the transfer of suitable patients from existing wards to the purpose-built inpatient units under the specified models of care.

The new inpatient units will provide contemporary care for patients with complex needs in a more appropriate environment, rather than in wards designed for acute medical and surgical care. This facility will ensure subacute patients receive care in the most appropriate setting, while increasing capacity across other areas of the Hospital and Health Service.

Strategic benefits include:

Optimising resource use by transferring suitable patients from existing wards to purpose-built units.

Providing contemporary care for patients with complex needs in a tailored environment.

Increasing acute bed capacity at both Robina Hospital and GCUH.

The main clinical goal of the new subacute inpatient units is to improve the functioning of patients with complex care needs who no longer require acute care.
