A baby boom in the city’s north has seen Gold Coast Health launch a community-based midwifery service at Upper Coomera to provide families with access to maternity care closer to home.

Your Midwives Brygon Creek consists of six Gold Coast Health midwives who deliver comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care through weekday clinics and home visits seven days a week.

Demand for Gold Coast Health maternity services continues to climb. Last year more than 700 families from Coomera and surrounding suburbs used our antenatal, birthing and postnatal services.

Women visit the Your Midwives Brygon Creek clinic for midwifery care, including childbirth education classes, birth at Gold Coast University Hospital and following early discharge are home visited by the same group of Brygon Creek midwives for up to three weeks.

Registered Midwife Katherine Pattie said the continuity of care model was popular with both Gold Coast women and midwives.

“I really enjoy working with the women, supporting them through pregnancy, helping to ease their transition into parenthood and preparing them for siblings of their children,” she said.

“It’s a special time in their lives and it’s really nice to be a part of that and to be able to offer support.”

Nursing and Midwifery Director Hazel Brittain said the northern Gold Coast had undergone rapid population growth and the health service was committed to meeting community needs.

“International research supports maternity services being easily accessible, close to where women live and providing women the opportunity to get to know their midwife throughout pregnancy, birth and postnatally in a continuity of midwifery care model.”

With child health already based in the building, the launch of Your Midwives Brygon Creek has transformed it into a one-stop health service for families from early pregnancy through to early childhood.

Your Midwives Brygon Creek is located at Level 1, 1 Brygon Creek Drive, Upper Coomera. Visit www.health.qld.gov.au/goldcoasthealth

Gold Coast Health also delivers community-based antenatal care at Southport and Robina health precincts, Labrador, Coomera Springs and Southport.
