The construction of the $72 million Sub-Acute Building at the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) has reached a major milestone with the "topping out" of the structure.
The Sub-Acute Building, linked to the main hospital, will provide an additional 70 beds for GCUH, which serves a wide geographical area, including interstate and overseas visitors to the Gold Coast.
The new building will feature purpose-built wards to support both older and younger patients with complex behavioural issues.
The three wards will include:
- 24 Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) beds
- 12 GEM beds and 12 Memory Support Unit beds
- 22 beds in a Complex Management Unit (CMU).
The dedicated Sub-Acute Building will alleviate pressure on the existing GCHHS hospital facilities, allowing for more efficient treatment of patients.
This strategic allocation of resources ensures that GCUH can continue to provide high-quality care to all patients while meeting the increasing demands placed upon its services.
The Sub-Acute Building project is part of Queensland's broader Queensland-wide Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program (AIDP) to swiftly bolster the state’s health care infrastructure.
The $72 million AIDP project joins a suite of active or recently delivered Gold Coast Health major projects:
- $1.3 billion Coomera Hospital
- $122.744 million Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU)
- $16.5 million AIDP Robina Emergency Department (ED) Expansion, which opened on 12 March 2024
- New Tugun Satellite Hospital, which opened on 15 November 2023 as part of a state-wide $377 million program.
Executive Director Infrastructure Planning, Delivery & Commissioning Richard Christensen said the GCUH Sub-Acute Building will not only reduce pressure on existing hospitals but also provide specialised care for longer-stay complex patients.
“It joins a suite of active or recently delivered Gold Coast Health major projects.
“These include the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) also at the GCUH campus achieving a similar 'topping out' milestone earlier this year, the Coomera Hospital currently in the planning phase, as well as the Robina Emergency Department (ED) Expansion, which opened on 12 March and the Tugun Satellite Hospital – co-named Banyahrmabah, which opened during November 2023.”
