From little things big things grow, and that is certainly the case for Varsity Lakes Day Hospital.
The facility launched seven years ago, and these staff were there at the beginning.
Theatre technicians Alf and Debra, registered nurse Melissa, administration officer Suzanne and Associate Nurse Unit Manager Maxim describe the facility as a family – a rapidly growing one.
The day hospital recently celebrated the milestone of reaching 1,000 monthly cases, which amounts to a daily surgery list of 30 patients, triple that of seven years ago.
The number of nursing staff has grown from 20 to 120 today.
“We first started with a very small team here at Varsity Lakes Day Hospital in 2017, and since then we’ve grown from a small family to a very big family that gets along and supports each other,” Debra says.
“The growth of the hospital shows how successful our team has been. I’m very honoured and appreciated to work here.”
Maxim, a scrub scout, progressed to become a Clinical Nurse and Associate NUM while working at Varsity Lakes.
“The increasing number of surgeries has come increased complexity, enabling us as clinicians to maintain and grow our skills and that’s something I welcome – it keeps my job interesting,” he said.
Services at the hospital have also grown to include endoscopy, plastics, orthopaedic and other surgery, and women’s health clinics.
This includes the new Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Interdisciplinary Clinical Service (EPPICS), the first service of its kind in Queensland.
Melissa added, “it’s great to be busy; I work in multiple areas of the hospital, which means I need to be very versatile, and I enjoy the challenge. It’s nice to see how we’ve grown from seven years ago to now.”
Congratulations to all the staff at Varsity Lakes Day Hospital!
