Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH)’s passionate Trauma Service team has been rewarded with a hard-earned accolade.
Representatives proudly took to the stage at the annual Trauma Conference in Melbourne recently to receive the Level-One Trauma Hospital certification from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
GCUH is one of only a handful of hospitals in Australia – and the only adult trauma centre in Queensland – to be verified as Level One and has maintained that top rating since 2019.
Acting Director of Trauma Services Professor Martin Wullschleger said, to be recognised for excellence was a big reward for the hard yards the team has done.
He said the service would not rest on its laurels and always strives for improvement.
After a two-day accreditation process, RACS declared the hospital’s trauma care to be ‘world-class’ and made special mention of patient-centred care that extended well beyond discharge.
Trauma Service Medical Director, Don Campbell says the centre has matured to provide excellent clinical care has and has led the way in Quality Improvement programs, Trauma Registry development, research and education activities.
“We have also developed some unique programs such as our nurse led Trauma Connect clinic, Trauma Service follow up program and Trauma Survivor Network,” Don said.
“There is a lot of passion and enthusiasm within our team which drives these programs.”
Trauma Nurse Practitioner, Kate Dale believes the Service’s success stems from the hospital’s supportive culture that promotes multi-disciplinary and holistic care for trauma patients.
“What sets us apart from others is the strength in the relationships between the specialities,” Kate said, “and the drive to always want to do better and improve the service that we provide to the Gold Coast community.”
Congratulations to all involved in the reverification process!
