Gold Coast Health Clinical Nurse Consultant Sebastian Clyde, or “Seb”, has been actively providing input on the development of the new Coomera Hospital as a member of the Project User Group (PUG). His involvement is focused on the design planning of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), ensuring the designs match the needs of the people who’ll work in the space.
To kick things off, tell us about your career journey…
I joined Gold Coast Health back in 2011, kicking off my career as a new graduate nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Fast forward to nearly two years ago, I stepped into the role of Clinical Nurse Consultant for equipment and consumables.
What does your current role at Gold Coast Health involve?
I coordinate and manage all the biomedical equipment and clinical supplies for the ICUs at both Robina Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH).
In this role, I work closely with medical vendors, the biomedical service team and asset management services to ensure all equipment is operating at its best. I also work with imprest services to maintain a steady supply of essential consumables, such as medications, dressings, and disposables.
Every day, I’m working with the ICU team and specialists to keep operations running smoothly, allowing us to deliver efficient, effective, and high-quality care to our ICU patients.
I also play a key role in ensuring corporate operations and procedures comply with legislation, statutory requirements, Queensland standards, corporate guidelines, and district policies, keeping everything up to date and aligned with best practices.
What has your role been in the new Coomera Hospital?
I’ve been involved with the design planning of the ICU, focused on storage, furniture, fixtures and equipment. I’ve also worked on developing the model of care that will be offered at the new hospital.
Why is it important clinicians have input into this future facility?
Clinicians play a key role in building a new hospital, offering valuable insights into the practical side of patient care, workflow, and safety.
When their input is included during the design phase, it creates a hospital environment that’s more functional, efficient, and supportive. Ultimately, positively impacting both patient care and staff satisfaction in the long run.
Do you have a highlight as a Project User Group (PUG) member?
Everything! I’ve really enjoyed working with all the Project User Group members. It’s been an eye-opener seeing all the work that goes on behind the scenes to bring something to life from the ground up.
What do you hope the Coomera Hospital will be?
A new hospital is a huge win for the community.
It improves access to quality health care, creates local jobs and gives the economy a boost. It also strengthens community health with wellness programs and preventive services while providing essential emergency care to make the area safer and more resilient.
Lastly, what do you do to stay healthy?
I’m a firm believer in treating yourself! However, to combat the overindulging I’ve recently jumped back into the pool after 20 years and it’s been a total game-changer. It’s not just great for staying fit, it’s been amazing for my mental health too.
