Key focus area for the unit
Located on the Ground floor of H Block at Gold Coast University Hospital, the 10-bed Acute Cognitive Unit (ACU) is co-located with a 12-bed Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) unit, providing an integrated model of care for older adults with a range of complex cognitive, medical and functional needs.
The GEM Unit will provide subacute restorative inpatient care for frail older persons with functional disability or cognitive impairment. The ACU is designed for patients living with dementia who experience significant Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD).
The unit provides short-term stabilisation and care planning. With an increasing number of people living with dementia in the community, Gold Coast Health is taking significant steps to ensure our health service is compassionate and responsive to the needs of older persons and their families.
New Model of Care
A new Model of Care has been developed for the Acute Cognitive Unit, which is aligned to the Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) strategy.
The care model is underpinned by training and infrastructure designed to support dignity-informed care.
Across four levels, H Block is Gold Coast Health’s 70-bed in-patient unit, located adjacent to Gold Coast University Hospital and is accessible via a linkway from the main hospital.
Together, these services provide our first dedicated inpatient units at GCUH for the older persons in a modern, purpose-built environment.
