What led you to this role?
Upon learning about the new Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU), I was eager to join a project where I can make a positive impact on many lives. With the support of my team, we will provide recovery-focused rehabilitation in a safe and comfortable environment. Being part of a progressive-minded team is incredibly rewarding.
What is your vision as Medical Director for Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU)?
Patients with complex mental health issues especially individuals who have been involved with the legal system, often face numerous challenges such as stigma, lack of support, substance use, homelessness, and limited literacy and life skills. Our aim is to empower these individuals by providing the necessary skills and support to live independently and thrive. By breaking this cycle, we aspire to create a positive win-win situation for everyone involved.
What challenges come from starting a service from scratch?
Good question! Starting a service from scratch involves extensive planning, networking, implementing changes, copious paperwork and a wide range of skills, all requiring dedicated commitment. Fortunately, I have joined a fantastic team who has been tirelessly working behind the scenes to make this project a huge success.
We are committed to delivering on our promise of a world-class rehab centre with a strong focus on intensive recovery.
What attracted you to SMHRU?
I have worked in forensic and rehab settings across various states in Australia, so I am well-acquainted with the challenges faced in these environments. I find helping individuals progress through these challenges incredibly rewarding. This new setting offers the perfect opportunity to apply my expertise, collaborate with a great team and share in this fulfilling journey.
What do you do to look after your own mental health?
I am deeply passionate about staff wellbeing and recognise the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. While short-term priorities may shift, self-care should always remain a long-term priority. For me, stress busters include eating healthily, getting enough sleep, and taking breaks to prevent fatigue and burnout. I recharge by spending quality time with friends and family, taking walks and sharing concerns in a safe space.
