Gold Coast Health doubles up on prestigious Magnet recognition

Gold Coast Health has once again received international recognition for excellence in nursing and midwifery, embedding itself further as a world-class healthcare provider.

The achievement comes through the US-based Magnet Recognition Program® - the gold standard of healthcare internationally - five years after Gold Coast Health became the first Australian whole health service to receive the accolade.

It follows a five-day site visit from three international appraisers who visited Gold Coast Health facilities in June 2025, including Tugun Satellite Health Centre, Varsity Lakes Day Hospital, Robina Hospital and Robina Health Precinct, Southport Health Precinct and Gold Coast University Hospital.

During their visit, appraisers met with over 750 nurses and midwives in 100 clinical and administrative areas to assess quality of care and patient safety, staff wellbeing, consumer and community engagement, education and research across Gold Coast Health.

Seven exemplars were identified throughout the process, including for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Equity Strategy, Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit and low staff turnover rate.

Ambulatory nursing sensitive clinical quality indicators also outperformed the national benchmarks.

Magnet recognition indicates a commitment to high-quality patient care, strong nursing and midwifery leadership, and a positive work environment for nurses and midwives that outperform national benchmarks.

Matthew Lunn and Cindy Shannon celebrate Magnet recognition

Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Patient Experience, Matthew Lunn and Board Chair Professor Cindy Shannon AM celebrate the achievement.

Gold Coast Health Acting Chief Executive, Ian Moody said this redesignation confirms what we already know - that Gold Coast Health delivers world-class healthcare through innovation and professional practice.

“We are the only whole health service to be recognised with this credential across Australia, which is a testament to our dedicated nursing and midwifery teams," he said.

“This recognition reinforces Gold Coast Health’s culture of excellence and positions us as an employer of choice particularly as we expand our workforce and facilities into the future.”

Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Patient Experience, Matthew Lunn said this achievement reflects Gold Coast Health's commitment to excellence.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our nursing and midwifery staff who put in the hours to prepare for this appraisal and continually strive for excellence in person-centred fundamental care," he said.

“We extend our thanks and congratulations to every team member who contributed to this achievement as we continue to set the standard and lead the way in delivering exceptional care.”
