Emergency Department Research Group honoured with prestigious statewide research award

The motivation of our Emergency Department Collaborative Research Group remains the same with every study: Keep patient care at the centre of its research. The team was awarded the Velocity Award at the Queensland Health Research Showcase. The accolade recognises teams that implement their research from theory into practice, implementing real-world solutions to improve the health of all Queenslanders.

Professor Julia Crilly OAM accepted the award on behalf of the team and was excited to see their research recognised, reflecting on how far the team has come.

“It’s so great to see how far we’ve come. We’ve gone from publishing three publications in 2005 to now undertaking nationally competitive and impactful research projects across multiple hospital sites,” Prof Crilly said.

“It’s wonderful to see research being led out of the busiest ED in the country shaping emergency healthcare delivery in Queensland.”

The Velocity Award, sponsored by Health Translation Queensland, specifically recognised three high-impact studies, highlighting the team’s ability to identify key challenges and rapidly translate research into meaningful clinical practice.

The team continues to grow from strength to strength, offering pathways that allow our clinical staff to undertake PhDs, just like Dr Peter Snelling, an Emergency Department Staff Specialist at Gold Coast University Hospital, who is currently undertaking the Gold Coast Research Fellowship, pairing his clinical expertise with a PhD.

The team was excited to share that one of Dr Snelling’s research papers was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a prestigious medical journal.

“Being able to have this research published in a prestigious journal is a testimony to the excellence that our Emergency Research Collaborative Group is achieving in this space.

“It’s an excellent team who are inspiring the current cohort of researchers who are passionate about patient care to strive for excellence,” he said.

When it comes to translating their research findings into practice, Professor Gerben Keijzers said it’s all about consumer engagement.

“When we implement our findings into practice, it’s about showing that these findings optimise patient outcomes, while making it easier for the staff and cheaper for the health system.”

This award is a celebration of the team and the impact they are having in bringing innovation to optimise the wellbeing of our patients.
