What we do

Our core belief is that people are not defined by their experience of illness. Embodying the Gold Coast Health philosophy of Always Care, the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit provides a therapeutic environment that conveys hope, optimism, and a belief in recovery to empower an individual to live a meaningful and connected life. Recovery goes beyond the individual and extends to consumers, their family, and the wider community.

Who can access this service

Consumers may have a diagnosis of a major mental disorder such as schizophrenia, related psychosis and mood disorders, alongside complex presentations including substance use disorders: a history of trauma: maladaptive patterns of behaviour, cognition, and clinically significant deficits in psychosocial functioning. The Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit inpatient service is available by referral to all consumers older than 18 years of age. We welcome referrals from acute inpatient services and occasionally from mental health courts or high secure units, when longer-term rehabilitation is required. Families and referrers are important partners in this process and we value open communication and collaboration to ensure the best outcomes for those in our care.

Through the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit philosophy of care, consumer aspirations are nurtured within a culture and language of hope and optimism, ensuring people feel valued, important, welcome and safe. Our expert and specialist team communicates positive expectations focusing on strengths and personal responsibility, as well as achievement of rehabilitation goals. This results in the promotion of autonomy, self-determination and collaboratively working towards independent living.
