Staff who entered the H Block staff art competition recently saw their artworks on display for the very first time – including Burleigh Bliss, a vibrant photograph capturing surfers waiting for the perfect wave at Burleigh Headland.
Created under the theme “An Image to Spark a Conversation”, the competition focused on designing a calming, visually engaging environment to help patients feel connected to their surroundings.
Gold Coast Health Junior House Officer (Emergency Medicine) and staff artist Ryan Churchill said seeing his work hanging on the walls was a rewarding moment.
“There’s so much more to us than just our roles as health care providers, so it’s really special to see Gold Coast Health supporting our creative passions by featuring our work in this space” Ryan said.
“I chose to submit a photo of Burleigh because it’s such an iconic spot on the Gold Coast that so many people love.
“Knowing my photo might bring comfort to someone or start a meaningful conversation is what truly matters.”
Gold Coast Health Creative Health Hub’s Senior Project Officer Laura Strange said the selected artworks were chosen with purpose and care.
“We worked closely as a team to select 10 artworks that were vibrant and meaningful,” Laura said.
“The goal was clear, representational photography showcasing the Gold Coast’s natural beauty – plants, wildlife and iconic scenery – while avoiding abstract images that could be confusing for those living with dementia or needing cognitive support.
“The artworks bring the outside world in, offering familiar, calming visuals to support older adults as they begin care in this new space.”
