Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit wins award

The Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) at Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH)

The Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU) has taken out top honours at the Master Builders Queensland Gold Coast Awards, winning the ‘Health Project over $20 million category’.

Delivered on schedule and within budget, this technically complex and highly secure facility met stringent operational and safety requirements while setting a new benchmark for mental health infrastructure.

The project marked the delivery of the first secure mental health rehabilitation unit on the Gold Coast, providing a much-needed facility to support vulnerable members of the community.

Its success is the result of seamless collaboration between Gold Coast Health, principal consultant in architecture ARCH, managing contractor BESIX Watpac and an extensive network of local subcontractors.

Specialised disciplines worked together on the project, with 100 per cent of subcontractors based in South-East Queensland and 115 apprentices and trainees were employed during delivery.

This award is a testament to the expertise, precision and teamwork that brought the project to life.

It recognises not only the strength of partnerships but also the contribution of the clinical and support staff who played an integral role in shaping the facility.
