The first consumers have now settled into the new Banksia Unit at Gold Coast Health’s Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU), with all 20 rooms expected to be occupied by the end of this month.

Mental Health and Specialist Services (MHSS) Clinical Director Dr Sandeep Chand said it was incredibly rewarding to see the vision shared by the project and clinical teams for the SMHRU become a reality.

“Before opening, we talked about creating a ‘home-like environment’ – and that’s exactly the feedback we’re now receiving from both consumers and their families and support networks,” Dr Chand said.

“All the preparation we did before opening – including recruitment, orientation, staff familiarisation, and training simulations – has ensured a smooth transition from project to service.

“These efforts meant the unit was fully prepared to deliver high-quality care from day one.

“I’d like to extend my sincere appreciation to all staff involved in bringing this incredible facility to life.

“This facility represents hope, healing, and a brighter future for some of the most vulnerable members of our community – and our staff are central to delivering that.”

Banksia Unit (B1) is the first of two wards within the $122.7 million, 40-bed facility, welcoming its first planned admissions from 19 March 2025.

A staged opening allows for safe treatment and care pathways to be established and tested before expanding the Banksia Unit to its full 20-bed capacity.

Located on Innovation Drive, the SMHRU provides long-term, secure care for adults with severe and complex mental health conditions.

The unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals, including doctors, nurses, allied health staff, and lived experience peer workers.

“From its homely atmosphere to the thoughtfully created therapeutic spaces, every detail has been developed to empower patients to regain independence and confidence,” Dr Chand explained.

“Whether it’s relearning how to cook, developing social skills, or simply rediscovering a sense of self, this unit provides the foundation for meaningful recovery.”

Planning is underway to open the second unit, Sandalwood, within the next year.
