A newly formed board with experience in health, leadership and government relations has been appointed to help shape the future of healthcare on the Gold Coast.
The Gold Coast Hospital and Health Board is led by continuing Chair Professor Cindy Shannon AM, who has a wealth of experience in First Nations health, health systems research and tertiary education.
“It’s wonderful to see two new faces joining the board this year and equally, I also acknowledge outgoing members for their valuable contributions,” Professor Shannon said.
“Among the new members is local clinician Professor Doug Shelton, who is a Pre-Eminent Staff Specialist and has been the Clinical Director of the Women, Newborn and Children's Health Services at Gold Coast HHS since 2017.
“Professor Shelton is joined by new member Ms Liesel Wett OAM, who has more than two decades’ experience as a CEO, Board Chair and Non-Executive Director (NED) within a broad range of health organisations.”
Current member Anthony (Nino) Di Marco was appointed the board’s new Deputy Chair.
The Gold Coast HHS has joined all other Queensland Hospital and Health Services in welcoming a local frontline practitioner to its board.
Changes to the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011 were announced last year, requiring all 16 of Queensland’s Hospital and Health Service Boards to include at least one Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registered health practitioner currently working for its local HHS.
These changes came into effect for the first time on 1 April 2026.
The board is responsible for the performance of their HHS and the delivery of local public health services under the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011.
