The Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) is a free maternity care service offered by Gold Coast Health. Based within the Birth Centre at Gold Coast University Hospital, MGP provides continuity of care throughout your pregnancy, labour, birth and the early weeks after your baby is born.
With MGP, you are cared for by a known midwife who gets to know you and your individual needs. Wherever possible, you will see the same midwife for your appointments and receive support from them during labour and birth. If your midwife is unavailable, another midwife from the MGP team will provide your care.
Your pregnancy appointments may take place:
Where possible, all appointments will be with your own MGP midwife.
You will give birth at Gold Coast University Hospital in either the Birth Centre or a birthing suite.
For women and babies who are well after birth, discharge home is usually planned within 4 to 6 hours. A postnatal home visit will be arranged within 12 to 24 hours of birth.
If complications arise during or after birth, you and your baby may be admitted to the Maternity Inpatient Unit for additional care and monitoring.
Following discharge, your MGP midwife will continue to provide personalised postnatal care based on your needs and those of your baby. This may include regular home visits during the first few weeks after birth.
MGP midwives provide 24-hour on-call support for women approaching birth and for maternity emergencies.
MGP may be suitable for women who:
