BreastScreen Queensland provides free, high quality breast cancer screening and assessment services for people who were assigned female at birth, present as female, or identity as female.
Services include:
Women aged between 50 and 74 years are recommended to attend for a regular breast screen every two years. Women in their 40s or aged 75 and older are also eligible for a free breast screen.
You can have a breast screen at either a permanent location or at our mobile unit. There are early morning, evening, and Saturday appointments available at some locations. You do not need a doctor’s referral.
A breast screen, or screening mammogram, is an x-ray that can pick up very small changes in the breast tissue, before they can be felt or noticed. For women over 50, a breast screen is the most effective way to detect breast cancer in its early stages.
If you have a lump, nipple discharge or any new breast changes, please contact your doctor without delay.
What happens at a breast screening appointment.
First Nations women, who screen at Gold Coast Service locations, are presented with a cultural shawl, which can be worn or used during their screen, if they wish.
The Sistas Shawl is a light fabric, thoughtfully designed to maintain modesty, without interfering in the screening process, during breast screenings. BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service is trained in the use of the Sistas Shawl, and women report feeling safe and supported during their screen. For more information, join the Sistahood and visit Sistas Shawl.
Further information to help support your visit, including resources for people with disability and translated information, is available at BreastScreen Queensland.
