Older Persons Mental Health – Orchid Unit

Who we are

The Orchid Unit, located at Gold Coast University Hospital, is a 20-bed acute inpatient facility providing specialist care for individuals aged 65 years and older who are experiencing acute mental health conditions alongside age-related complexities and can no longer be safely managed in the community.

Services are delivered by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, including registered nurses, psychiatrists and medical registrars, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, peer and carer support workers, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers. Together, this diverse team provides expert clinical care, evidence-based therapies, functional and psychosocial support, and culturally safe, recovery-oriented interventions.

What we do

Our multidiscipinary team provides comprehensive assessment, collaborative treatment planning and coordinated discharge support for older adults with acute mental health conditions. Each discipline contributes expertise to deliver a holistic, recovery-oriented model of care, addressing both mental health and age-related complexities.

Within a therapeutic inpatient environment, we:

  • Stabilise acute symptoms through evidence-based interventions
  • Promote functional independence and wellbeing using physical, psychological and social strategies
  • Engage families and carers as partners in care
  • Ensure seamless transition to community supports post-discharge
