The community can take a sneak peek at what’s to come with the release of artist impressions and a virtual fly-through animation of the new Coomera Hospital.
The virtual tour of the future hospital paints a picture of what patients will see when they walk through the doors, including an inpatient unit, reception, waiting areas and shops.
To mark the milestone, ministerial officials joined Health Capital Division Senior Director Linda Sullivan Traditional Owner Uncle John Graham and Gold Coast Health’s Sandip Kumar to officially turn the sod at the new Coomera Hospital site on Wednesday 29 May 2024.
The new Coomera Hospital has significantly progressed since the project commenced late 2023, with the site now cleared and earthworks being undertaken in parallel with detailed design.
Executive Director for Transformation and Digital Sandip Kumar said he, alongside local residents and businesses who had already expressed positive sentiment about the new Coomera Hospital, was excited to see the project continue to progress.
“It’s important to note the new Coomera Hospital will be a facility that will benefit the whole city, alleviating pressure across Gold Coast Health’s entire network, in particular Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital,” Sandip said.
“The 404-bed facility will also bring new services and enhance health care accessibility for the Northern Corridor, one of Australia’s fastest-growing populations.
“As well as reducing travel times and providing quality health care closer to home, the new Coomera Hospital will improve patient-centred care through new models of care and the latest health technology.
“The hospital is currently in the planning and design phase with earthworks now underway and main construction scheduled to be completed by late 2027.”
The main construction is forecast to kick off in early 2025 with the current focus on leveling the site and moving from concept design to detailed design.
The project team is working closely with clinicians, consumers and community representatives to gather input to inform both the design and the models of care for the future facility.
Planned for completion in late 2027, the new Coomera Hospital is designed to cater to the growing population of the northern Gold Coast corridor.
Located on 41 George Alexander Way, the new $1.3 billion state-of-the-art 404-bed health care facility will be perched on the elevated land adjoining the Coomera Train Station.
The Coomera Hospital will feature a wide range of specialties including medical, surgical, maternity, paediatrics, and intensive care units, among others.
The new Coomera Hospital is part of the Queensland Government’s “Big Build” Capacity Expansion Program (CEP), which brings top-tier health care to Queensland's rapidly growing communities.
The CEP will deliver three new hospitals, including the new Coomera, Bundaberg, and Toowoomba Hospitals as well as the new Queensland Cancer Centre, and major expansions to 11 hospitals across the state.
The Coomera Hospital stands out as the only hospital of this size to be built in a new location, rather than being an expansion or a relocation of services.
