Patients are being welcomed into the refurbished H2 East ward at Robina Hospital, marking a new chapter in specialised care for older adults on the Gold Coast.
The contemporary 20-bed ward includes a 10-bed Acute Cognitive Unit (ACU) and 10-bed Acute Geriatric Unit (AGU), designed to support older adults experiencing Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), and those with complex cognitive, medical and functional needs.
The opening expands access to dedicated cognitive and geriatric services closer to home for patients and families living in the central and southern Gold Coast.
Designed in partnership with clinicians, the ward incorporates design elements that promote comfort, familiarity, connection and wellbeing.
Features include a revitalised outdoor garden terrace, improved wayfinding, enhanced lighting, dedicated activity and quiet spaces and a collection of artwork from local Gold Coast artists and staff.
Gold Coast Health Nurse Unit Manager Tracey Miller said the opening represented an important milestone for older adult care at Robina Hospital.
“This refit at Robina gives us the opportunity to create a space that feels calm, familiar and supportive for patients,” Tracey said.
“H2 East has been designed to help patients feel comfortable during their hospital stay while supporting the delivery of specialised care.”
Gold Coast Health Medical Director of Aged Care, Dr Claudia Wong, said the ward supports older adults through every stage of their healthcare journey.
“Older adults often require specialised assessment, treatment and rehabilitation that extends beyond their immediate medical needs,” Dr Wong said.
“This contemporary ward supports a model of care that delivers continuity across the patient journey, providing older adults with specialist geriatric care from admission through to discharge and beyond.
“It focuses on maintaining independence while supporting coordinated planning for the next stage of care, improving access to services closer to home for patients and their families.”
The artwork displayed throughout H2 East features familiar Gold Coast landscapes, natural environments and recognisable landmarks, supporting moments of recognition, connection and comfort for patients and families.
Gold Coast Health Nursing Director Catherine King said the new ward recognised the important role the physical environment plays in supporting patient experiences and outcomes.
“Spaces that promote calm, comfort and engagement can help create a positive experience for patients, families and staff,” Catherine said.
“The combination of access to outdoor space, meaningful activity areas and familiar artwork creates an environment that supports the unique needs of older adults and their families.”
The opening of H2 East strengthens specialised cognitive and geriatric services at Robina Hospital and supports Gold Coast Health's commitment to delivering contemporary care for the region's growing and ageing population.
Staff welcomed the first patients into the new ward on Tuesday 28 July 2026, marking the completion of months of planning, collaboration and refurbishment works to create a thoughtfully designed environment for older adult care.
