The annual Gold Coast Photographic Society (GCPS) showcase exhibition is on display in the Gold Coast University Hospital foyer until 29 August, thanks to the Creative Health Hub.
The theme is 'Chasing Clouds' and showcases works by local artists who represent a range of skill levels and varied approaches to photography.
The winners of this year’s competition were recently announced at Gold Coast University Hospital.
First place in the non-A grade category was Bruce Thompson for his ‘UFO Cloud’; First Place in the A grade category was Vi Wilson for her work ‘South Georgia Genie’; and the People’s Choice Award was taken out by Gold Coast Health’s very own Simon Leonard, Clinical Nurse in Infection Control, for his photograph ‘Riding on a Cloud’.
Simon says that Photography motivates him to enjoy the world and can be a wonderful grounding activity that is great for mental health and stress management.
“For me photography is an opportunity to see the world differently, and while it is so very different from nursing, many of the skills I use in nursing help to improve my photography – for example, empathy and communication.” Said Simon.
Gold Coast Photographic Society member Andrew Swinfield, who presented this year’s awards on behalf of the GCPS President, shared his recent experience at Gold Coast University Hospital, where his worlds as photographer and patient collided.
“A little over 3 weeks ago, I spent 11 days here in the trauma ward following a bike accident. It was a unique chance for me to experience the world class treatment and care that has enabled me to progress to where I am today", Andrew said.
“So, it’s great to be a part of a group that offers a creative distraction for the hardworking staff and recuperating patients in an environment that offers respite to them and transports them beyond their workplace, even for a short while – to ‘chase some clouds’ with the Creative Health Hub.”
