New paediatric platform fast-tracks specialist support for Gold Coast children

The Queensland-first model supports children up to 18 years old.

Gold Coast Health has launched DevPaed Connect, a Queensland first shared-care model designed to accelerate access to specialist support for children with developmental, learning or behavioural differences.

Developed by Senior Paediatrician Dr Angela Owens in collaboration with Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) and local GPs, the digital interface enables GPs to connect directly with developmental paediatric specialists via secure messaging or short consultations.

Across Australia, the number of children being identified with developmental or behavioural conditions is rising, yet many specialist waitlists stretch 12-18 months.

DevPaed Connect enables GPs to submit a secure clinical question through the platform and receive specialist advice within 1–2 business days.

“With more families seeking support and GPs eager to access specialist advice when needed, this model answers a growing call for timely, practical support," Dr Angela Owens said.

“Families can now have their GP connect with a paediatrician within days, meaning they get the benefit of specialist input without losing the trusted relationship they already have with their GP."

The digital platform was co-designed with technology partner Foxo, ensuring secure digital interface between GPs and paediatricians.

“It allows GPs to stay at the centre of care while accessing specialist guidance," GCPHN Deputy Board Chair, Dr Ka-Kiu Cheung, said.

“This model reflects what modern primary care should be: connected and collaborative care, designed around the needs of children and their families, and enabled by innovative digital tools."

“While some children will still require specialist intervention, this service provides families with practical support in the meantime, bridging the gap and improving outcomes so Gold Coast children receive the help they need, when it matters most," Dr Owens added.

More than 500 Gold Coast children are estimated to benefit from the new initiative in its first year.
