The American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® is an international credential that recognises healthcare organisations for excellence in nursing and interprofessional care and patient outcomes. Magnet organisations are known for their commitment to providing quality services, achieving high levels of patient and staff satisfaction, and innovation.
In 2020, Gold Coast Health received international recognition for becoming the first full health service in Australia to receive the prestigious Magnet Recognition. Every four years, we need to reapply for designation and provide interim reports demonstrating our performance and clinical indicators against national benchmarks
It was recently confirmed that Gold Coast Health will proceed directly to a Magnet site visit following a review of extensive reapplication documentation submitted in December 2024. This is an outstanding achievement, as few organisations progress immediately to this stage.
What is a Magnet Site Visit?
Imagine a team of expert appraisers visiting a healthcare organisation to see if it has what it takes to be recognised for world-class services. This is what happens during a Magnet site visit, the final step in the appraisal process of the Magnet Program.
These appraisers evaluate how well the organisation demonstrates the five Magnet model components: transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovations and improvements, and empirical outcomes. It's our health service’ chance to shine and show off its excellence in nursing and interprofessional care.
Executive Director, Nursing, Midwifery and Patient Experience, Matthew Lunn, was ecstatic to receive this news.
“We are so proud of the work our nurses and midwives and interprofessional teams do to ensure the best possible care and services are provided to the Gold Coast community every day,” he said.
Samantha Clayton, Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) Professional Practice and Magnet Program Director, thanked staff for helping Gold Coast Health reach such an achievement.
“Thank you for your ongoing assistance as we prepare over the coming weeks to ensure the site visit runs smoothly. Site visit is our opportunity to shine, as appraisers meet with as many services as possible to hear about the amazing work our teams do every day.”
The site visit will occur between Monday 9 to Friday 13 June, where appraisers from the United States will visit our health service to verify, clarify and amplify the examples submitted as part of the Magnet documentation.
In the lead up to the site visit, patients, families and the public are invited to provide feedback to the Magnet Program Office about Gold Coast Health. If you wish to share any feedback, you can find more information here. Your feedback will not be shared with Gold Coast Health.
