Gold Coast Health has welcomed the newest cohort of junior doctors beginning their careers at Gold Coast University Hospital.
A total of 91 medical interns will strengthen the Gold Coast’s frontline healthcare workforce, with one-third arriving from interstate and other areas of Queensland to train in one of Australia’s busiest health services.
Following orientation, interns will begin clinical rotations next week across Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Mental Health, Obstetrics, Paediatrics, and other specialties, gaining hands-on experience to care for the community.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Raghu Murthy said the Gold Coast was proud to welcome the new cohort as they commence their medical profession in one of Australia’s busiest health services.
“Attracting more interstate medical interns to our frontline health workforce reinforces Gold Coast Health’s reputation as a leading tertiary teaching institution,” Dr Murthy said.
“The year will be a journey of growth as interns support patients at their most vulnerable, from young children to patients nearing end-of-life. It’s both a professional and deeply rewarding journey.
They are the future of Queensland’s healthcare system, and we’re ensuring they have the skills and support to deliver exceptional care.
Bond University graduate Sonali Mohan is amongst the 91-strong cohort and said her motivation to study medicine stemmed from her late grandmother.
“I have always been passionate about advocacy and engaging with others and found out after my grandmother passed away that she always saw potential in me for this career,” Sonali said.
“She was a Registered Nurse, and when I looked more into medicine I realised it was the perfect career for me.
“I’m looking forward to giving back to the Gold Coast community that has supported me in recent years and am ready to embrace the responsibility of helping people in their most vulnerable times.”
