August is 'Multicultural Queensland Month,' dedicated to celebrating multiculturalism and fostering an inclusive community across our state. It's a time when people from all walks of life come together to celebrate the rich cultural diversity that defines Queensland.
This year, the Creative Health Hub is honouring the occasion by showcasing the works of artist Tsung-Lin (Zong Lin) Li.
Originating from the island of Taiwan, Li’s journey as an artist is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion. Remarkably, he embarked on his artistic path without any formal training or professional guidance. Instead, he honed his skills by meticulously imitating the works of renowned artists.
Li’s turning point came when he met the esteemed Taiwanese artist Mr. Ju Hai Chen. Under Mr. Chen’s mentorship, Li blossomed. Mr. Chen, recognising Li's raw talent, selflessly guided the young artist, helping him achieve stellar scores in specialty subjects. This mentorship paved the way for Li’s admission to the prestigious Fu-Hsin Art and Trade School in Taiwan, where he graduated with flying colours. His time at the school was marked by numerous awards from various competitions, underscoring his burgeoning talent.
Today, Tsung-Lin Li calls the Gold Coast home, where he lives with his family, including his twin daughters. Embracing his role as a professional artist, Li also dedicates himself to teaching art to both adults and children, fostering a new generation of artists.
The exhibition on display at Gold Coast University Hospital highlights their cultural heritage and promotes a deeper appreciation of multiculturalism within the health setting. Li’s art, with its unique blend of Taiwanese tradition and personal expression, serves as a focal point, drawing viewers into a world of vibrant colours and profound stories.
Currently, Tsung-Lin Li is undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer at the Gold Coast University Hospital. Despite his challenging health journey, his spirit remains unbroken, and his art continues to inspire and uplift. His works are on display in the main foyer, offering a beacon of hope and resilience to fellow patients, staff, and visitors.
Through his art and teaching, Tsung-Lin Li continues to bridge cultures and inspire others. His journey from Taiwan to the Gold Coast is a powerful reminder of the beauty of cultural diversity and the limitless possibilities that arise when passion meets opportunity.
As Queensland celebrates its multicultural month, artists like Li stand as beacons of creativity and cultural fusion, enriching the community with their unique perspectives and talents. Li’s story is not just one of artistic achievement but also of courage and determination, proving that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit can create beauty and inspire hope.
