Behind the Build: Meet the Team – Capital and Minor Works

The Capital and Minor Works team plays a key role in renewing, improving and building infrastructure across Gold Coast Health, delivering projects that ensure our hospitals and health facilities remain safe, compliant and fit-for-purpose.

To kick things off, tell us about the team…

The Capital and Minor Works team is responsible for planning and delivering infrastructure upgrades, refurbishments, asset replacements and small-to-medium scale capital projects across the Gold Coast Health.

Our work supports hospitals including Gold Coast University Hospital, Robina Hospital and Southport Health Precinct, as well as community and health facilities such as the Tugun Satellite Health Centre. We focus on improving functionality, increasing capacity and enabling new models of care, all while working within clinical environments and minimising disruption to daily operations.

Ultimately, we help create spaces where clinicians can deliver the best possible care to the Gold Coast community.

What types of projects are you typically involved in?

Our scope ranges from minor works through to complex staged refurbishments to deliver a broad range of projects including:

  • Clinical refurbishments such as wards, operating theatres and outpatient areas
  • Infrastructure upgrades including heating, ventilation and air conditioning, electrical and fire systems
  • Compliance and safety works
  • Capacity expansion projects
  • Asset renewals and replacements
  • Staff and support service improvements such as offices, amenities and back-of-house areas.

Much of this work happens behind the scenes. Can you share an example of a project that made a real difference?

A recent example is the Emergency Department refurbishment and reconfiguration at Gold Coast University Hospital and Robina Hospital.

The project involved reconfiguring clinical spaces, increasing patient capacity and upgrading essential services to better support the triaging of patients.

The outcome is a functional and efficient space for staff and a comfortable environment for patients. We’ve received positive feedback from clinicians, particularly around improved workflow and usability.

Another key project underway is the Southport Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) Expansion, which forms part of a broader Queensland Government program to increase diagnostic imaging capacity across the state.

At Southport, the project includes the installation of additional imaging equipment and associated infrastructure, delivered within an operational health environment.

Looking back across the past year, what are some highlights the team is proud of?

The team has delivered a high volume of projects across multiple facilities, often within tight timeframes and complex operational environments.

Key highlights include delivering projects with minimal disruption, strengthening engagement with clinical stakeholders, improving project governance and consistently meeting budget and program targets.

What stands out most is the team’s ability to adapt and deliver under pressure while maintaining a strong focus on quality outcomes.

If you had to describe the team in three words, what would they be?

Collaborative. Adaptable. Delivery-focused.

These reflect how we work with stakeholders, respond to challenges and consistently deliver projects that support care across the Gold Coast.

Because when our infrastructure works seamlessly behind the scenes, our teams can focus on what matters most, caring for the community.
