Useful Management Information
The Paediatric Perioperative Occupational Therapy service supports children/young people and their families throughout the surgical journey by providing individualised and developmentally appropriate support to reduce anxiety and promote engagement.
This service is only available for children and young people that are known and accepted under any specialty and the operation is occurring at Gold Coast University Hospital. The purpose of the clinic is to work with children/young people who have a surgery/procedure under general anesthetic scheduled and there is an identified concern regarding coping and participation in the perioperative environment, surgical and/or hospital related occupations.
The service includes comprehensive assessment and intervention including pre-operative education, medical play/rehearsal, procedure and environmental preparation and exposure, distraction therapy and environmental and task modifications. A perioperative support plan is developed in collaboration with the child/young person and their families’ highlighting considerations and modifications that will help support their participation and engagement in the perioperative admission. This plan is then provided to the perioperative team including anaesthetics, surgical and nursing staff.
The Paediatric Perioperative Occupational Therapy clinic is run on a Tuesday and Wednesday mornings weekly from 9-12pm.
