Useful Management Information
The Paediatric Occupational Therapy (OT) concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) service is an OT led clinic servicing infants, children and young people aged from 0-16 years old, who have sustained a concussion/mTBI and presented to the Gold Coast Hospital Health Service (GCHHS). We accept referrals for patients who have received medical and or allied health care in the emergency department (ED) or those that have had an inpatient admission for a concussion/mTBI and reside within the GCHHS catchment.
The purpose of this clinic is for post acuteoccupational therapy mild traumatic brain injury management (i.e. first few weeks of recovery) including education and support with optimising symptoms for return to daily activities such as self-cares, sleep, school, leisure/social engagement. This clinic is not a rehabilitation service, therefore if a patient has ongoing post concussive/mTBI symptoms at ~4-6wks post injury, an onward referral to the Queensland Paediatric Rehabilitation Service (QPRS) is required.
This clinic is predominantly run via telehealth/phone consultations with minimal capacity for in person appointments unless OT deems necessary for further face-to-face cognitive assessments on a case by case basis. The clinic is only run on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.
Please note, we do not have a dedicated multi-disciplinary team (MDT) led concussion/mTBI service within paediatrics at GCHHS, therefore, if the patient requires MDT management of their mTBI, please consider a referral to the QPRS or further discussions with the paediatric allied health team at GCHHS.
