Useful Management Information

The Paediatric Occupational Therapy Continence service aims to provide consistent and timely evidenced-based care for children (3yo and up) and adolescents experiencing difficulties with their continence management. It currently runs in conjunction withPaediatric Medical and Paediatric Surgical clinics and can make internal referrals to other Allied Health on a case-by-case basis as required to support their continence journey.

Initial appointments are currently on a Friday and run as a face-face hour long appointment. The majority of follow-up appointments occur as a telehealth from a Monday afternoon. The purpose of Occupational Therapy is to focus on the behavioural aspect of toileting, providing education to parents and children, and coaching parents to attain the skills to manage their journey.

The service does not provide for nighttime bedwetting or general toilet training. These concerns could be raised with their GP and with support from Child Health Nurses.

For children who have an NDIS plan, the primary engagement will be to capacity-build their NDIS funded OT to provide the ongoing supports re: continence management.

Children will be reviewed by a Consultant first if they are:

  • < 4 years old
  • have a medical or neurological condition or physical pathology eg Hirschsprungs, Spina Bifida Occulta, Muscular Dystrophy
  • Developmental co-morbidities e.g. ASD level 2 or 3, GDD
  • Significant medical concerns such as Growth concerns, persistent vomiting, blood or mucous in the stool
  • New onset of daytime urinary incontinence
