Useful Management Information

Brain Injury Community Integration Service (BICS)aims to maximise community integration outcomes for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) and their families. BICS provide a patient-centred and goal-directed program for up to 12 months, with an emphasis on developing clients’ self-management skills, facilitating independence, and return to valued life roles.

The services provides:

  • ABI clinical case management
  • Comprehensive planning and establishment of sustainable support networks
  • Training, advocacy and consultancy
  • Capacity building strategies and interventions to adults with moderate to severe ABI living in the community

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)

Patients diagnosed with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic) such as:

  • Hypoxic Brain Injury
  • Haemorrhagic or ischaemic stroke
  • Infection or tumour related ABI

and are experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Clients requiring urgent management of their brain injury due to medical risk factors (e.g., high seizure risk and not managing in the community)
  • Clients with no formal or informal community support networks in place
  • Clients who are at high risk of:
    • Homelessness
    • Psychological vulnerability
    • Carer strain/stress
    • Abuse (physical, financial, sexual, or psychological) from the client or family member
    • Admission to hospital
    • Engagement with the criminal justice system
  • Clients who were actively engaged with another BICS or ABIOS and have relocated
  • Child living in out of home care
  • Clients who are pregnant
  • Clients who have caregiving responsibilities where significant risk is identified
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)

Patients diagnosed with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic) such as:

  • Hypoxic Brain Injury
  • Haemorrhagic or ischaemic stroke
  • Infection or tumour related ABI

and are experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Clients with limited formal or informal community support networks in place
  • Clients who are at medium risk of:
    • Homelessness
    • Psychological vulnerability
    • Carer strain/stress
    • Abuse (physical, financial, sexual, or psychological) from the client or family member
    • Admission to hospital
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)

Patients diagnosed with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (traumatic and non-traumatic) such as:

  • Hypoxic Brain Injury
  • Haemorrhagic or ischaemic stroke
  • Infection or tumour related ABI

and are experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Clients with limited formal or informal community support networks in place
  • Clients who are at low risk of:
    • Homelessness
    • Psychological vulnerability
    • Carer strain/stress
    • Abuse (physical, financial, sexual, or psychological) from the client or family member
    • Admission to hospital

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

    • Reason for referral / Goals for BICS program
    • Physical status and self-care
    • Social / Family situation
    • Cognitive, emotional and behaviour status
    • Speech and communication
    • Recreation and vocation
