Orchid Unit - Older Persons Mental Health

Who we are 

The Orchid Unit is a 20-bed acute inpatient unit at Gold Coast University Hospital, dedicated to individuals over 65 years of age, with acute mental health conditions and co-existing age-related issues that can no longer be safely supported in the community.  

Our multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychiatrists, registrars, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers, lived experience (peer) and carer peer workers, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers. 

What we do 

We provide assessment, collaborative treatment, and discharge planning for individuals over 65 years of age with acute mental illness. Our therapeutic environment helps resolve acute symptoms and supports recovery through a holistic approach.   

Who can access this service? 

Older adults who are 65 years of age and above, with acute mental health needs from within the Gold Coast region can access our services.  

How to access this service  

Referrals for admissions are through 1300 MH CALL (1300 64 22 55) and patients of other Queensland Health services (e.g. Crisis Stabilisation Unit, Emergency Departments, Community Services).

Visiting hours  

4pm to 8pm, Monday to Friday.
10am to 8pm, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.
