Useful Management Information

  • Refer to local guidelines
  • For Tinnitus Handicap Inventory Score > 4, consider concurrent psychology referral
  • Patient education/tinnitus management advice
  • Chronic tinnitus consider referral to:
    • private audiology for hearing aid if hearing loss present, masking hearing aid, tinnitus retraining therapy
    • public/private audiology for patient education/tinnitus management advice
      • psychologist
  • Unilateral tinnitus may require investigation for retro cochlear lesion; consider Imaging for investigation of retro cochlear lesion
  • Consider referral to a Dentist &/or Physiotherapist if associated TMJ suspected

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)
  • No category 1 criteria
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • Bilateral and disabling with significant concerns about wellbeing (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory Score ≥ 4 or TRQ >17
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • Bilateral and disabling(Tinnitus Handicap Inventory Score <4 or TRQ <17)

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

  • functional impact of tinnitus
  • associated symptoms
  • ENT/Otological history (history of middle ear disease/surgery etc.)

Additional Referral Information

  • Psychological history
  • Documented TMJ or recent dental work (Dental/Physiotherapist as necessary
  • Any intervention and its effect
