Reactive thrombocytosis can be seen in:
- Iron deficiency
- Post splenectomy
- Chronic kidney disorders
- Acute blood loss
- Haemolytic anaemia
- Allergic reactions
- Inflammation
- Acute physical stress (MI, major surgery, burns, pancreatitis etc)
- Drug side effects
- Persistently elevated (over 3 months) platelet counts above 450 X 10/l that are not associated with iron deficiency or post splenectomy should be referred to Haematology.

Essential Referral Information
- Serial FBC show monitoring over 3 months
- Iron studies
- CRP/ESR
Additional Referral Information
- JAK2 V617F testing
- Calreticulin mutation* (only if JAK2 V617F negative)
- C-MPL* (only if JAK2 and Calreticulin negative)
- Can define essential thrombocythaemia
* Note: there is no Medicare rebate for these tests
