Useful Management Information

The assessment of static volumes refers to the measurement of various lung capacities and volumes including total lung capacity (TLC).

Indications:

  • Establish or confirm a restrictive ventilatory defect.
  • Diagnose hyperinflation and/or air trapping that can occur in obstructive lung diseases.
  • Assess response to therapeutic interventions.
  • Aid in the interpretation of other lung function tests.

Clinical advice:

  • Claustrophobia or other factors that limit access to the body box.
  • Temporary interruption of supplemental oxygen and intravenous fluids is required. This may be contraindicated in some patients.

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category Category 1 ((appointment within 30 calendar days))
  • Requires tests within 30 days.
Category Category 2 ((appointment within 90 calendar days))
  • Requires appointment within 90 days.
Category Category 3 ((appointment within 365 calendar days))
  • Requires appointment within 365 days.

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

Essential Referral Information

  • Reason for referral - what is the clinical question to be answered by performing the test?
  • Current respiratory medications
  • Infectious status

If a specific test result is unable to be obtained due to access, financial, religious, cultural or consent reasons a Clinical Override may be requested. This reason must be clearly articulated in the body of the referral.
