Useful Management Information
- Refer to local HealthPathways or local guidelines
- Any patient with a neutropenia <1.0 X 109/l and signs of sepsis should be urgently referred to Emergency
- Most isolated neutropenia’s are transient and related to infections and drugs. If there are no symptoms to suggest sepsis it is appropriate for these patients to be closely reviewed in primary care as they usually resolve within 2 weeks. These patients should be given instructions to attend Emergency if any symptoms of sepsis occur.
- Patients of African and Middle Eastern origin often have a neutrophil count of 1.0-1.5 x 109/L and do not require assessment unless new or associated with red flags.
