- Consider pre-operative optimisation of anaemia, as defined by a haemoglobin of < 13.0g/dL in men and 12.0g/dL in women, prior to referral
- Smoking is a contraindication to hip and knee arthroplasty surgery

- Obesity is associated with an increase in complications associated with surgery – consider dietitian & weight reduction if BMI is >35

Essential Referral Information
- Pain history
- Functional impact including on employment if applicable
- Plain Xray – preferably weight bearing
- Management including analgesic requirements
- Smoking status
- Height, weight and BMI
- HbA1C (diabetic patients only)
Additional Referral Information
- Ultrasound may be useful for suspected soft tissue pathology e.g. gluteal tendonitis, trochanteric bursitis
- MRI or CT of the lumbosacral spine may assist in diagnosing referred pain to the hip region
- Previous surgery
