Useful Management Information

  • Clinical urgency is the dominant consideration in the prioritisation of a referral for a child currently in out of home care (OOHC), or at risk of entering or leaving OOHC.

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)
  • Headache suspicious for raised intracranial pressure e.g. concerning increase in head circumference, morning headache
  • Newly diagnosed hydrocephalus
  • Headaches and loss of developmental milestones
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • Previously diagnosed and treated hydrocephalus for review or patient has moved from interstate
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • No category 3 criteria
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service.

Clinical neurological assessment

Additional Referral Information

  • MRI/CT results
  • USS result (for concerning increase in head circumference)
  • Previous problems with general anaesthesia and/or significant parental concern about anaesthesia
