Useful Management Information

  • Do not use muscle active aperients (stimulant)
  • Use faecal softeners, regular toileting programs, dietary advice
  • Failure of constipation management program – refer to general paediatrics
  • In general, constipation and encopresis are not primarily surgical conditions. They are dealt with by general paediatrics. the role of paediatric surgery is to exclude surgical pathologies (e.g. Hirschsprung disease)
  • Paediatric surgery registrars at GCUH can offer telephone advice in business hours to rural HHS. In some areas it would be more appropriate to seek initial advice from local paediatric medical service or general surgery services
