Useful Management Information

  • If dietary cause suspected, modify diet and/or refer to a dietitian.
  • If gastrointestinal cause suspected, please refer to Endoscopy.
  • If appropriate, treat with supplements (eg iron, vitamin B12, folate).
  • Cease any aggravating medications if possible (eg NSAIDS).

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)
  • Symptomatic anaemia (Hb<80g/L) with no high- risk features
  • Anaemia associated with suspected malignancy (e.g. weight loss, fever/night sweats, bone pain)
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • Persistent unexplained mild to moderate anaemia (Hb 80-110g/L)
  • Anaemia refractory to iron or B12/folate supplementation
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • No category 3 criteria
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service.

Essential Referral Information

  • Details of relevant signs and symptoms
  • Details of all treatments offered and efficacy
  • Relevant medical history, co-morbidities and medications
  • Duration of anaemia (if known)
  • Medication history (especially NSAIDS, aspirin, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants)
  • FBC
  • ELFT
  • ESR
  • TSH
  • Iron studies
  • Vitamin B12 & folate

If a specific test result is unable to be obtained due to access, financial, religious, cultural or consent reasons a Clinical Override may be requested. This reason must be clearly articulated in the body of the referral.

Additional Referral Information

  • Serial FBC results (if available)
  • History of alcohol and drug use
  • History of menorrhagia
  • CRP
  • Coombs test or haptoglobin results
