Useful Management Information

The Acute Gynaecology Unit (AGU) is a department that operates seven days a week at the Gold Coast University Hospital between 0800 – 1600hrs, outside of these hours please contacting gynecology. The AGU department treats womens with a known gynaecology concern. Please know that the AGU department are not for acutely unwell patients and consumers will be in an outpatient setting waiting in chairs. 

The AGU accepts referrals from both internal and external clinicians. Patient that are post-operative and known to the Gold Coast University Hospital Gynecological department are able to self-refer by calling the nursing number on discharge letter/summary.

Minimum Referral Criteria

Does your patient meet the minimum referral criteria?
Category 1 (appointment within 30 calendar days)

All the below conditions where the patient presented to GCUH or Robina emergency department; are deemed hemodynamically stable to present to the acute gynaecology unit:

  • Bartholin’s cysts/abscesses OR other labial or vaginal cysts/abscesses
  • Acute vulval concerns
  • Non-severe pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Post-coital bleeding
  • Stable post large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) complications
  • Stable post-operative complications (E.g port site infection, vaginal bleeding or discharge)
  • Suspected displaced mirena
  • Emergency contraception
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding or irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Genital prolapse without urinary retention
Category 2 (appointment within 90 calendar days)
  • No category 2 criteria
Category 3 (appointment within 365 calendar days)
  • No Category 3 Criteria

If your patient does not meet the minimum referral criteria

  • Assessment and management information may be found on a range of conditions at HealthPathways
  • If the patient does not meet the criteria for referral but the referring practitioner believes the patient requires specialist review, a clinical override may be requested:
    • Please explain why (e.g. warning signs or symptoms, clinical modifiers, uncertain about diagnosis, etc.)
  • Please note that your referral may not be accepted or may be redirected to another service

  • Date of operation
  • FBC
  • History of abnormal bleeding/hormonal contraceptive use

Additional Referral Information

  • Most recent or current cervical screening
  • Pelvic USS (TVS preferable)
  • BMI
  • STI Screen result
