Research ethics

Commencing a research study within or in association with Gold Coast Health is a two-step process:

  • Seek approval from our Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)
  • Complete a Research Governance (Site Specific Assessment) application.

A project cannot commence until both HREC approval and SSA authorisation are obtained at site.

Our HREC is constituted and functions in accordance with the National Health and Medical Research Council National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007, updated May 2015 (National Statement) and complies with:

  • Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research 2007
  • Queensland Health Research Management Policy.

Our NHMRC code is EC00160.

How to apply for an ethical review

Low and negligible risk (LNR)

What is low risk?

The only foreseeable risk is one of discomfort such as measuring blood pressure or interview-induced anxiety. Where the risk, even if unlikely, is more serious than discomfort, the research is not low risk.

What is negligible risk?

There is no foreseeable risk of harm or discomfort, or any foreseeable risk is not more than inconvenience to a participant such as completing a de-identified survey.
